Tale
Lee, who talks about his life in Mexico City among American expat students and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits. He strives to win over a young man named Allerton, whose prototype was Adelbert Lewis Marker. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian offers a brief overview of the 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Honora and the dangerously erotic Misericordia. Luca Guadagnino stated in an interview that “Queer” is a project that he wanted to dream since he was 20 years old. “Queer” has strong echoes of the same director’s film “Call me by my name”. The central character in both films is clearly gay, while the object of his desire is more difficult to define.
He is played, magnificently, by Daniel Craig
As in the previous film, we are not in America, but we are among Americans. However, while the main character in “Call Me by Your Name” was a sexually pulsating teenager, here our attention is focused on a middle-aged writer addicted to drugs and alcohol. The first part of “QUEER” includes will-they?/won’t-they, as Craig William Lee’s character longs/lusts over the fresh-faced ex-soldier Eugene Allerton, played, superbly, by Drew Starkey. With the excellent support of Jason Schwartzman and. Drew Droge, who plays other inhabitants of local cafes and bars, the film maintains a steady pace. The script (Justin Kuritzkes, based on the book by William S.
Burrow) and direction are as reliable as expected
But the film picks up steam in the last third, when Lee and Allerton go on a field trip to find a plant that, as Lee understands, can release the human ability to telepathy. This unlikely adventure eventually leads to a meeting with a certain Dr. Cotter, whom they find deep in the jungle conducting research. Dr. Cotter is played, in an amazing performance, by the great Leslie Manville, unrecognizable at first, so complete is her transformation. It’s surprising that even such a wonderful actor as Daniel Craig is unfortunately somewhat humiliated by such a great actor as Manville in a role that shows her with maximum comfort.
She is simply gorgeous
She does nothing but her work. Give this woman an Oscar, please. QUEER is made with great care, has many wonderful scenes and, interestingly, owes, as Guardagnino himself stated, to the work of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. This is a film about a deep desire to establish contact, even to the point of fusion, with another person. In this sense, again, like the best of Powell and Pressburger, he is extremely romantic. For some, it may seem overly romantic.
But look at QUEER
For me, the difference between, say, BLACK NARCISSUS or A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH and this film is that I went in just by watching QUEER, rather than being carried away by it the way I was carried away by CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, which, I admit, is a less successful film. It’s a must see.. Check out the full list of entries for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall.
